WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
Students enrolled in the Certified Pharmacy Technician Program at Rooted Health Institute will gain the knowledge and practical skills needed to work in pharmacy settings such as retail pharmacies, hospitals, and long-term care facilities.
Module 1
Introduction to pharmacy practice
Students are introduced to the pharmacy profession, the role of pharmacy technicians, and the history and evolution of pharmacy practice. This module also explores professional organizations, career pathways, and the importance of continuing education in healthcare.Module 3
Controlled Substances & Pharmacy Regulations
This module covers controlled substance schedules, DEA regulations, and proper handling and documentation requirements. Students learn how to recognize fraudulent prescriptions and understand procedures for safely storing and dispensing controlled medications.Module 2
Medication Prescriptions: General Overview
Learn tools for organizing ideas, setting goals, and building consistent schedules. From brainstorming to publishing, this course helps turn scattered thoughts into a cohesive plan.Module 4 The Prescription Dispensing Process Students learn the full dispensing workflow, including interpreting prescriptions, entering medication orders, selecting medications using NDC numbers, and performing quality assurance checks to ensure accuracy and patient safety.Module 6 Self-Management Skills, Communication and Teamwork This module focuses on developing the professional skills needed to succeed in healthcare settings, including communication, teamwork, time management, and workplace professionalism. Students learn how to work effectively within pharmacy teams while maintaining high standards of responsibility and patient care.Module 5: Part 1 and Part 2 Pharmacy Calculations Students develop the skills necessary to perform pharmacy calculations used in medication preparation and dispensing. Topics include dosage calculations, day supply, intravenous additives, and other common pharmacy math applications.Module 7 Patient Interaction This module focuses on developing the professional skills needed to succeed in healthcare settings, including communication, teamwork, time management, and workplace professionalism. Students learn how to work effectively within pharmacy teams while maintaining high standards of responsibility and patient care.Module 8
Overview of Federal Privacy Requirements
This module introduces federal privacy laws that protect patient health information. Students learn the basics of HIPAA regulations, the importance of maintaining patient confidentiality, and the responsibilities of pharmacy technicians in safeguarding sensitive healthcare information.Module 9
Managed Care Prescriptions
This module introduces students to managed care and pharmacy insurance processes. Students learn how prescriptions are processed through insurance systems, including prior authorizations, formulary requirements, and billing procedures used in pharmacy practice Module 10
Non-Dispensing Duties
This module introduces the responsibilities pharmacy technicians perform outside of medication dispensing. Students learn about inventory management, medication storage, pharmacy organization, and administrative tasks that support efficient pharmacy operations and patient care.Module 11
Drug and Medical Terminology
This module introduces students to the medical and pharmaceutical terms commonly used in healthcare and pharmacy practice. Students learn the meaning of prefixes, suffixes, and root words used in medication names and medical terminology to support accurate communication and prescription processing.Module 12
Basic Anatomy and Physiology
This module introduces the basic structure and function of the human body. Students learn key body systems and how medications affect different parts of the body, helping them better understand drug therapy and pharmacy practice.Module 13
Basic Pharmacology
This module introduces the fundamental principles of pharmacology. Students learn how medications work in the body, common drug classifications, and basic concepts related to drug actions, uses, and potential side effects.Module 14
Most Commonly Prescribed Intervention
This module introduces commonly prescribed medications and their uses in treating various health conditions. Students learn drug classifications, indications, and important considerations when handling medications in pharmacy practice.Module 15
Infectious Control, Wellness & Disease Prevention
Students learn the principles of infection control, disease prevention, and wellness practices used in healthcare settings. This module emphasizes patient safety and proper procedures for maintaining a clean and safe pharmacy environment.Module 16
Over The Counter (OTC) Medications
This module focuses on non-prescription medications commonly available in pharmacies. Students learn the uses, classifications, and safe handling of OTC medications and how pharmacy technicians assist pharmacists in guiding patients to appropriate products.Module 17
Unit Dose Systems & Medication Repackaging
Students learn about unit dose medication systems used in hospital and institutional pharmacies. This module covers medication repackaging procedures, labeling requirements, and proper handling techniques to ensure medication safety and accuracy.Module 18
Non-Sterile Product Compounding
This module introduces the preparation of nonsterile compounded medications. Students learn basic compounding techniques used to prepare creams, ointments, and other medications while following safety and quality standards in pharmacy practice.Module 19
Sterile Product Compounding
Students learn the principles of sterile compounding used in hospital and clinical pharmacy environments. This module covers aseptic techniques, sterile preparation procedures, and safety practices required when handling sterile medications.Module 20
Emergency Situations
This module prepares students to recognize and respond appropriately to emergency situations that may occur in pharmacy settings.
