Students enrolled in the Phlebotomy Technician Program at Rooted Health Institute will gain the knowledge and hands-on skills needed to safely collect and process blood specimens while providing quality patient care. Graduates will be prepared to pursue opportunities in healthcare settings such as hospitals, laboratories, physician offices, outpatient clinics, and blood donation centers.

Phlebotomy Technician Training Program

At Rooted Health Institute, we are committed to creating real pathways into healthcare careers. Our Phlebotomy Technician Program prepares students with the knowledge and practical skills needed to safely collect blood specimens, interact professionally with patients, follow infection-control procedures, and support accurate laboratory testing.

Students receive instruction in venipuncture, capillary collection, specimen handling, anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, safety, professionalism, and patient communication. The program combines classroom instruction with hands-on skills training designed to prepare students for entry-level phlebotomy roles and national certification.

What You’ll Learn

Our comprehensive 6-module phlebotomy curriculum provides students with the knowledge and practical skills needed to prepare for entry-level work in phlebotomy and specimen collection, including:

  • The role, responsibilities, ethics, and scope of practice of the phlebotomy technician

  • Cardiovascular anatomy, physiology, hemostasis, and coagulation

  • Medical terminology commonly used in phlebotomy and laboratory settings

  • Infection control, standard precautions, PPE, and bloodborne pathogen safety

  • HIPAA, workplace safety, quality control, and regulatory compliance

  • Patient identification, preparation, consent, positioning, and communication

  • Venipuncture techniques, site selection, equipment selection, and order of draw

  • Capillary and dermal puncture procedures

  • Special collections and considerations for difficult draws and special populations

  • Specimen labeling, handling, processing, transport, and storage

  • Prevention and management of complications during blood collection

  • Professional communication, patient interaction, and workplace readiness

Students develop both the technical knowledge and hands-on skills needed to perform blood collection procedures safely, accurately, and professionally.

✔ The NHA ExCPT certification has received an ACE (American Council on Education) college credit recommendation, which may support future educational pathways at participating colleges and universities*

⚠️ Transferability of ACE-recommended credits is determined by the receiving institution.

Externship Opportunities

Eligible students may have the opportunity to participate in a clinical externship at an approved healthcare, laboratory, or phlebotomy training site.

Externship experiences are designed to allow students to apply classroom and laboratory knowledge in a professional healthcare setting, strengthen blood collection and specimen-handling skills, develop confidence interacting with patients, and gain exposure to daily phlebotomy and laboratory operations.

Externship placement is not guaranteed and is subject to:

  • Site availability

  • Student eligibility and academic standing

  • Successful completion of required coursework and skills competencies

  • Background-screening and drug-screening requirements

  • Immunization, health, or safety requirements

  • CPR or other site-specific requirements, when applicable

  • Completion of all onboarding requirements established by the training site

  • Final approval by Rooted Health Institute and the participating externship site

Specific externship requirements, schedules, clinical hours, and onboarding requirements may vary by location and training partner.

Potential College Credit Opportunity

Students who successfully pass the NHA Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) certification examination may be eligible for an American Council on Education (ACE) college credit recommendation.

The NHA CPT certification examination currently has an ACE recommendation of:

  • Two semester credit hours

  • Lower-division baccalaureate level

  • Subject area: Phlebotomy

  • Potential consideration toward continuing education

  • Potential consideration toward career development

  • Potential consideration toward completion of a related educational program

Students should be aware that:

  • Students may need to submit an official ACE-supported credential or transcript record to the college or university for evaluation

  • Each institution establishes its own prior-learning and transfer-credit policies

  • Acceptance and application of ACE-recommended credit are determined solely by the receiving institution

  • Recommended credit may not transfer to every college or university

  • College credit is not guaranteed

  • Rooted Health Institute does not directly award college credit

Students should contact the college or university they are considering to confirm whether ACE-recommended credit for the NHA Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) examination will be accepted and how it may apply toward their program of study.
